Since my arrival in Maitland in 2004, one of my passions has been to get art and artists into conversations with the history and unique features of this amazing locality and its communities. My commitment to the visual arts is combined with my – and my historian wife, Janis Wilton’s – commitment to the significance and value of making the past come alive and inviting people to appreciate the links between past, present and future. We want people to see, hear, feel, taste, touch, experience and imagine Maitland as it was, is and can be. To this end, MRAG continues to initiate projects that evoke and present different perspectives on Maitland and its stories.

Michelle Maartensz, Untitled, 2008, digital lambda print, 50.8 x 76.2 cm
During 2008 and 2009, three photographers – Carla Feltham, Michelle Maartensz and Martin Trew – were invited to photographically record the construction of the new MRAG building. Each came at a different time and with their different approach, and although they knew about each other’s projects and purposes, they worked alone and very quietly on Construction. MRAG staff, who continued to work in the original building throughout the closure, almost never saw them in or near the site. As a result, each artist has captured a contrastingly different view and responses to the structure taking shape as the new MRAG.… » Read More
