Margaret Olley and the MRAG Collection Margaret Olley was much loved by many and it was a sad day for MRAG when she passed away on the 26th July. MRAG was proud to have ‘Olley’ accept the honour of being a patron of Maitland Regional Art Gallery, and she delighted all who attended the grand re-opening of our gallery in August 2009, alongside our other gallery patron Ray Wilson. There are two wonderful paintings by Margaret Olley in the MRAG collection which we currently have on display in the gallery, in tribute. Banksias,  is a large oil on board painting… » Read More

Late last year artists Gillie and Marc Schattner contacted MRAG to offer their latest sculpture to the MRAG Collection on a long term loan basis. Nothing is lost in the universe – Buddha Sitting peacefully, and somewhat incongruously, in a corner of the collection room is a serene Burmese Buddha. Secured in a protective crate and cloaked in not so holy robes of bubble-wrap, he sits patiently, waiting to be carried out into the public spaces of the gallery to be viewed once more by those seeking ‘enlightenment’. This Buddha belongs to the small sub-collection within the MRAG Collection comprising of Asian artworks. Centuries old Chinese scrolls, ceramic funerary urns, terracotta Thai jars and Asian paintings have all found their way, over time and distance… » Read More
