Margo Lewers was one of Australia’s formost Abstract Expressionist painters in the 20th century. While painting was Margo’s major practice she was a versatile artist who successfully worked in a variety of media including mosaics, plexiglass constructions and hand painted wall hangings. Major public commissions included “Expansion” a monumental mosaic measuring 2.3 metres by 12.3 metres which she cut by hand and installed at the front entrance to the Canberra Rex Hotel in 1960.The exhibition celebrates the 2010 restoration of the mosaic with the support of Heritage ACT and the Canberra Rex Hotel, accompanied by a number of paintings and wall hangings. These works demonstrate the relationship between her use of colour and line in her paintings and their extension into a more defined space made possible by the exploration of the mosaic.

The exhibition ” Margo Lewers – Mosaics and related work” opens at 3 pm at the Maitland Regional Art Gallery on the 18th of May.
