Archibald Prize 2014 Regional Tour | FREE ENTRY
January 17, 2015 — February 21, 2015Free
Since its inception in 1921, the Archibald Prize has continued to be one of Australia’s most prestigious art awards and never fails to draw interest, attention and debate. Awarded to the best portrait painting, the Archibald Prize is a who’s who of Australian culture – from politicians to celebrities, sporting heroes to artists. This year, 54 finalists were shortlisted by the Trustees of the Art Gallery of New South Wales from 884 entries. Ultimately, Fiona Lowry was awarded as the winner, receiving $75,000 for her portrait, Penelope Seidler.
Maitland Regional Gallery this Summer hosts 6 exhibitions including the 2014 Archibald Prize, touring exhibitions from the Museum of Contemporary Art Collection, international artists, local artists as well as aspiring apprentice artisans from outback NSW or just up the road. In addition, the Gallery is hosting more than 70 FREE events for all generations, opening up the back doors for a behind-the-scenes look at how we install exhibitions, care for our own collections or engage our volunteer team. Pop-up back-yards in the gardens, the café and the history of the building itself will encourage all visitors to enjoy all that MRAG has to offer the community it loves so much.
