Brian Roberts and Shirley Cameron-Roberts were commissioned by Leigh and Brendan McPherson on behalf of Donaldson Coal to paint Progression to be submitted by 2007. The head office of the coal mining company had moved to Sydney and desired to hang a work of art in a narrow passageway. Apparently the company’s interior designer had suggested a selection of photographs about  coal as an idea for this enclosed and rather distinct area. Leigh McPherson, however, knew the husband and wife artists, had previously bought their individual art and obviously felt that, although they had not previously worked together on the same painting, as a couple in life they could rise to the challenge as a couple in art. Style, form and specific content were left to the discretion of the two artists.
