The small collection of Asian artworks has been donated to the MRAG collection over the last 6 years by one of MRAG’s generous benefactors. This donor inherited many Chinese artworks from his grandfather, who visited China regularly in the 1920s and 1930s. As a result he also inherited an interest in art from the region and has continued to acquire Asian artworks, some of which have since been donated to MRAG.
Works in the Asian collection include, ceramic funerary urns, terracotta Thai jars, a marble Burmese Buddha, Asian paintings and centuries old silk and paper scrolls. A large pair of temple doors, from 19th Century Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) China, is on permanent display in the gallery.
