How to get here

MRAG is situated in the Hunter Region 30 minutes west of Newcastle, just east of the tourist center of the Hunter Valley Vineyards. Maitland is neighbored by Museum of Art & Culture (Lake Macquarie),The Lock-Up, Newcastle Art Gallery and Newcastle Museum all only 30 – 40 minutes away from Maitland with which MRAG has a professional, constant and co-operative working relationship.

Walk, ride or take public transport.
  • Train: High st station (6 min. walk), Maitland station (12 min. walk)
  • Bus: High st (5 min. walk)
Free car parking available at nearby parking areas or take advantage of street parking along High St:
  • Art Gallery car park, access via laneway off James St
  • Maitland City Council car park, access via Grant St

Accessibility

MRAG is wheelchair & pram accessible, for best access use Art Gallery car park and rear access door. Alternatively an access ramp is available on the corner of James and High Streets. A baby change table is available onsite.

Maitland Regional Art Gallery (MRAG) provides inclusive access to our exhibitions, public programs, shop and café for all its visitors.

Maitland Regional Art Gallery is passionate and committed to ensuring that we are accessible and inclusive to all members of community. To help include people that live with sensory processing disorder, their families and carers we have implemented a new initiative called the Sensory Bag. The sensory bag is available any time the gallery is open, please ask our staff if you would like to use bag and the sensory assistance items.

Social Script and Visual Schedule

Both these resources are available to all visitors who would like a preview of the Gallery at home before visiting (Social Script) or who would benefit from a visual resource to help understand what they can see and do in the gallery when they arrive here (Visual Schedule).

Parking

The MRAG carpark offers two free dedicated disabled parking spaces, which are in close proximity to the flat concrete access path at the rear of the building. The MRAG car park is accessed via a service road off James Street, leading to the security gates on the northern side of the premises. Please note that these gates are locked daily at 5:30pm.

There is additional free council car parking on James Street behind the gallery premises, however it is partially unsealed.


Family Friendly

MRAG is pram friendly, for best access use Art Gallery car park and rear access door. Alternatively an access ramp is available on the corner of James and High Streets. A baby change table is available onsite.

For families with sensory needs we can provide break out space and sensory packs on request.


Entrance and Exit
Front of building:

MRAG’s main entry on High Street is accessible by stairs (5 shallow steps), or via a permanent access ramp on James Street (adjacent). Café Seraphine has its own entry on James Street. For wheelchair or mobility vehicle access to the café prior to gallery opening times, please contact Café Seraphine on (02) 4934 7264 to arrange entry through the front or rear entry points.

Rear of building:

A level entry point is available along a flat concrete path via the MRAG car park. This is the best point of access for wheelchair or mobility vehicle entry.

Inside the building:

All public areas within the building can be accessed by stairs and lift. Please see staff at the Information Desk if you require gallery floorplans or other information once inside the gallery.

  • Courtesy wheelchairs are available upon request from the Information Desk, without charge.
  • Fully accessible bathroom facilities are located on the Ground Floor.
  • MRAG welcomes leashed registered assistance and guide dogs. Water bowls can be provided upon request.
