Brenda Clouten Memorial Award 2012: Maggie Hensel-Brown
September 7, 2012 — November 10, 2012Free
Winner of the 2012 Brenda Clouten Award, Maggie Hensel-Brown creates much of her artistic practice on notions of femininity using ribbons, frills and lipstick as themes and materials in her work. Combining these feminine signifiers with strong and sturdy industrial objects gives them a confusing yet steadfast feminine appearance. Masses of frills, delicate pieces of red velvet, or folded and pleated fabric rest on steel structures or stone surroundings; they are raw materials playing dress ups. Maggie is a young, upcoming talent keeping Brenda alive in our hearts.
The Brenda Clouten memorial scholarship was established to support a young achiever in visual arts who is a resident of the Hunter Valley to produce artwork for an 11 week exhibition at MRAG. Brenda was 60 when she passed away of breast cancer after first being diagnosed in June 1999. She derived a lot of pleasure from the arts. This scholarship founded by Vicki and Bruce Woods is a way of creating a lasting memorial that will give benefit to a young, upcoming talent and keep Brenda alive in our hearts.
