Brushing Up on Sumi Ink with Renae Carlson
November 7, 2015 | 12:00 am
Art lovers interested in a hands-on exploration of the distinctive world of Japanese ink art will enjoy Brushing up on Sumi Ink.
After fashioning their own brushes from bamboo, participants will experiment with sumi ink – a stunning medium handmade from the soot of Japan’s mountain pines bound with bone and natural oils and set in ash.
Participants can bring in an object or picture as a starting point if they like; otherwise Renae will provide suitable material to be rendered in the gleaming black of sumi ink.
Renae Carlson will guide the class through a variety of effects using ink on a range of both wet and dry paper textures, while talking through samples of her own work and that of modern and traditional Japanese masters.
The use of white space in Japanese ink work will also be discussed and practised, and, as the day progresses, pastels will be incorporated.
