Nicola Bolton | The Garden Palette

July 28 2018 — October 14 2018

Many artists have a deeply rooted connection to their environment and draw inspiration from patterns in nature. Nicola Bolton’s The Garden Palette explores the artist’s strong affinity for the gardens surrounding her late Victorian era home in Bolwarra as well as her interaction with gardens whilst traveling in the UK and Europe.

Photography is integral to Nicola’s artistic practice, which has its foundations in the detailed interrogation of natural environments and depiction of the Australian landscape. In this series, Nicola uses the technique of over-painting to blend notions of the photographic and the painterly. These images inhabit the space between traditional botanical illustrations and contemporary photographic documentation.

By encouraging the viewer to question the medium they see, the images invite consideration, contemplation and investigation of the image to see each flower or plant for its stunning singularity; the beauty of colour, texture and pattern.
