Denese Oates: Sculpture

Denese Oates has been making and exhibiting her unique art for more than thirty years. The work has always been about what transpires in our own experience; what is possible; and what can be found as imaginable and credible in it. She has involved the viewer in structures that are complex often shifting in perspective, critical and analytical and makes us, the public think!

As a practicing full time artist throughout this time she has kept her audience tuned into and mesmerised with a variety of mediums that over the years have changed but finally or perhaps lately she has found a very comfortable place. 

Oats’ current choice of expression is sculpture, primarily in the form of metal, a material that like a dancer she carefully choreographs. She does not use other artists for reference as she intimately explores her particular private art world. Her interest has centred on movement and displacement, however, she can nevertheless still surprise the viewer with a spontaneity that is measured, the accidental that is harnessed and the fancies that bring activity into and shape her private, unique and personal problems in new directions. Her art partakes of the elemental, simple and familiar in its primary concern with the essence of all that is alive. She carefully and very meticulously explores and interprets nature: her forms are dominated by and at the same time capitulate to the environment and the power of life. The sensual world allows her expressionistic abstraction sensibility to simply act as a spark for her awareness of the fragile and the organic which in turn invites her creative imagination to germinate and flower and then create.

The exhibition will be available until 1 May – entry to the art gallery is always free and everyone is welcome.
