I have become very interested in 19th century maritime
transport to Australia. In the 1840’s thousands of Irish
women and girls were sent here under The Earl Grey
Scheme to escape The Great Hunger, ‘an Gorta Mor’.
My fourth great-grandmother Francisium (Fanny) - was
one of these girls. She arrived in Australia in 1849 with
her sisters Lilian, Francis and Harriet on SS Digby. Ocean
voyagers to Australia were long, uncomfortable and
treacherous. I am fascinated by the voyage, the distance,
and the strength of those on this journey. Were they as
confident, brave, courageous, spirited and daring as I
imagine, or did they just simply survive?

It’s easier to see the Pleiades constellation with the
naked eye, not by looking directly at it, but by directing
your gaze to beside the seven stars.
Steam, telegraph wires, stars and vines are my averted
gaze at the cosmos of the mother and daughter.
