When Kierkegaard wrote that his life was nothing but ‘a mood, a single colour’, he was not considering the range of meanings that a single colour can generate. Such an understanding is fundamental to the artist in the solitude of his or her studio, as they begin to discover the potentialities of their chosen medium. A colour is no one thing but an entire spectrum of possibilities depending on how it is used.
